Feminist photographer: Celebrating 5 Years of Neighborhood Feminists

Nadine van der Wielen

In 2024, Neighborhood Feminists (NF) marked a major milestone—five years of fighting for menstrual equity in Amsterdam. As the longest-serving volunteer, I couldn't be prouder of what this organization has achieved since its founding in 2019.

To celebrate this incredible journey, we gathered at the Kazerne in Zuid-Oost for an evening filled with reflection, discussion, and celebration. The night kicked off with a thought-provoking Q&A session with NF founder Tammy, alongside brilliant researchers from Opinium Life, who worked on the recent CODE RED report—a groundbreaking study shedding light on the ongoing issue of period poverty in Amsterdam.

The conversation was powerful, highlighting both the progress made and the urgent need to continue their work. Despite NF’s impressive impact—supporting 3,570+ people monthly through 65+ Menstruation Stations and distributing over 719,666 period products—the CODE RED research revealed that over 56,000 menstruating people in Amsterdam still struggle to afford basic period products.

A Celebration of Feminist Community

After the Q&A, the atmosphere shifted to one of joy and connection. We lit candles, indulged in cake and bubbles, and celebrated five years of relentless activism, solidarity, and change.

Being surrounded by such a warm, passionate, and engaged feminist community was truly special. The evening was a reminder of why NF’s mission remains so crucial—and why we need to keep pushing forward. Feminist photographer
